The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS\/CEDEAO) has formally suspended the Republic of Niger’s membership until constitutional order is reinstated in the country. This decision was conveyed in an official statement released by the regional body, following resolutions made during the summit of heads of state and government convened on Sunday in Abuja.<\/p>\n
The statement highlighted that, up until the 64th ordinary session held on December 10, 2023, the Conference of Heads of State and Government regarded the situation in Niger as a coup attempt but continued to recognize Mohamed Bazoum as the President of the Republic of Niger and Head of State. This stance exempted Niger from suspension in ECOWAS’ decision-making bodies, allowing members of Bazoum’s government to represent the country in ECOWAS’ statutory meetings.<\/p>\n
However, the summit on December 10 acknowledged that Mohamed Bazoum’s government had effectively been ousted through a military coup. Consequently, the statement declared the suspension of Niger from all decision-making bodies of ECOWAS, effective December 10, 2023, until constitutional order is reinstated in the country.<\/p>\n
During the Abuja meeting, ECOWAS leaders urged the military junta of Niger, which assumed power in a coup on July 26, to release deposed President Mohamed Bazoum in exchange for lifting the sanctions imposed on the country. Regrettably, this proposal was rejected by the junta’s leader, Omar Abdourahmane Tchiani, who reiterated the refusal to release Mr. Bazoum.<\/p>\n
Following the summit, the bloc presented a proposal to lift sanctions, contingent on the release of the deposed president, and requested the junta to shorten the current three-year transition period.
