The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has vehemently opposed the plan by the Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, to restructure the power sector. Ajaero stated that the proposed restructuring, which involves unbundling the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), poses a significant threat to the power sector and raises concerns among major stakeholders.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued in Abuja, the NLC expressed fear and trepidation over the plan, noting that it mirrors a failed privatization exercise previously attempted in the sector. The statement highlighted that the term “unbundling” is unsettling for the masses and workers due to the historical impact it had on the downstream sector and the power sector.<\/p>\n
The NLC warned of multidimensional disasters if the plan is implemented, emphasizing that handing over the transmission infrastructure to private entities could lead to blackmail and weaken the sector’s ability to transmit and distribute power across the country. The privatization, according to NLC, could replicate the crises witnessed in Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and Generation Companies (GENCOs), affecting the quality of service delivery.<\/p>\n
The statement also criticized the privatization exercise, pointing out that despite a 500% tariff increase, there has been no noticeable improvement in power services to Nigerians.
