Jarvis Johnson, a US lawmaker representing Texas District 139 in the House of Representatives, has called on Nigeria’s Supreme Court to order the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Johnson’s appeal aligns with the sentiments expressed by Kanu’s international counsel, Bruce Fein, in an open letter to the Supreme Court Justices dated December 2, 2023.<\/p>\n

In a statement shared by Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Johnson emphasized that the Supreme Court is set to decide on December 15, 2023, whether to affirm numerous unchallenged judgments and orders from various legal jurisdictions calling for Kanu’s unconditional release.<\/p>\n

Johnson outlined undisputed facts, including Kanu’s extradition from Kenya by the Federal Government on June 27, 2021, and highlighted the recent High Court ruling in Enugu State, which deemed the classification of IPOB as a terrorist group unconstitutional. He stressed that there is no valid legal basis for Kanu’s continued solitary confinement.<\/p>\n

The US lawmaker noted that various Nigerian courts, including those in Umuhia, Abia State, and Abuja’s Court of Appeals, have reached similar conclusions, ordering Kanu’s immediate release, with no pending legal matters against him.
