Paul Osei-Kuffour, the Network Coordinator, underscored that 75% of citizens in 34 African countries support limiting presidential mandates to two terms, as revealed in a comprehensive research report. The urgency to mobilize pro-democracy actors and raise public awareness about the implications of tenure elongation was emphasized, particularly in instances where these efforts have been more successful than unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

The roundtable, attended by a diverse array of pro-democracy forces, serves as a platform to deliberate and find pragmatic solutions to counter unconstitutional changes in government in the region. Kojo Asante, Director of Programmes and Policy Engagement at the Centre for Democracy and Development Ghana (CDD-Ghana), highlighted the pivotal role civil society and citizens play in advocating for rules against term elongations within ECOWAS.<\/p>\n

Marie Josiane-Ngah, the WADEMOS Project Co-ordinator Francophone, stressed the necessity to strengthen collaboration among Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), influencers, and pro-democratic actors to effectively combat the institutionalization of term limits. This meeting is a part of a broader civic campaign aimed at influencing the adoption of term limits within the West African region.<\/p>\n

Prof David Dosseh, the Coordinator of Front Togo Debout, emphasized the need for courage in working towards strengthening democracy in the region. He acknowledged that while democracy may not be a flawless system, it remains preferable to other alternatives.<\/p>\n
