The announcement comes into effect from January 17, according to Dr. James Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD).

Dr. Lalu made this disclosure during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday as part of the activities commemorating the 2023 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The NCPWD, established with the responsibility of enforcing disability laws, is set to transition from advocacy to active enforcement after the expiration of a five-year ultimatum given to organizations.

The Commission will initiate a special task force in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to oversee the implementation of accessibility laws. Dr. Lalu emphasized that the task force would be formed before the end of the year, with enforcement scheduled to begin on January 17, 2024, at 12 am.

He highlighted the focus of the enforcement, stating, “The commission’s task force will move out in full force and will start visiting key offices for the physical assessment of facilities in the key offices.”

Furthermore, the NCPWD aims to ensure not only compliance with accessibility requirements but also the provision of five percent employment opportunities for Persons with Disabilities within organizations. Dr. Lalu emphasized that the assessment would extend beyond physical facilities, encompassing the composition of staff and the fulfillment of employment quotas for PWDs.

Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, expressed full support for the NCPWD’s initiative, acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s Administration’s backing for the implementation of accessibility laws. She affirmed her commitment to supporting the Commission in its efforts to protect the rights and privileges of PWDs, emphasizing that the effective implementation of disability laws is a collective responsibility of all Nigerians.

In a bid to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), the Federal Government of Nigeria has declared its intention to shut down public buildings that fail to meet the minimum standards for accessibility.
