Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for the All Progressives Congress (APC), to secure political dominance in the South South region ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a meeting with Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo at his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio outlined his vision for political change in the region.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Anietie Ekong, Akpabio explained his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for the APC, citing the need to enhance representation and influence for the South South at the national level.
“There was a need for us to change the political basket to better represent our people and have a say in national affairs,” he said.
Currently, the PDP governs Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta States, while the APC holds power in Edo.
Akpabio believes expanding APC’s influence across the region would bring significant developmental benefits and strengthen the party’s position in national politics.
The move underscores ongoing political realignments and power struggles as Nigeria’s major parties gear up for the next electoral cycle.
