Nigeria’s U20 women’s football team, the Falconets, suffered a 1-3 loss to Germany in their second Group D encounter at the ongoing 2024 FIFA Under 20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.
According to the Nigerian News Agency, the match took place at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogota, Colombia.
The Nigerian girls were unable to keep up with the German team’s pace during the match.
The triumph catapulted Germany to the top of the group with six points from two games, while Nigeria is in second position with three points after defeating South Korea on matchday one.
Germany seized the lead in the 17th minute when Sehitler Alara scored, capitalizing on a defensive error by Nigeria.
Despite struggling to make an impact in the first half, the Falconets came out stronger in the second half, leveling the score in the 50th minute through Chiamaka Okwuchukwu.
However, Germany reacted quickly, with Sofie Zdebel scoring a crisp goal in the 61st minute to give the Germans the lead.
The Video Assistant Referee also disallowed one of the Falconets’ goals.
Nigeria pushed forward in pursuit of an equalizer, but their dreams were dashed when Sarah Ernst scored Germany’s third goal, securing the victory for the three-time champions.
As a result, Germany maintains a flawless record, having won two of two matches, while Nigeria now confronts a more difficult path to the Round of 16.
The Falconets are currently waiting for the game between Korea Republic and Venezuela to find out where they stand.
To advance to the knockout stages, the Falconets will need to deliver a great performance in their final group match against Venezuela.
The Falconets will play Venezuela in their last group game on Saturday, while Germany will face Korea Republic.
