The Plateau Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended five suspects in connection with the alleged diversion of two trucks loaded with 70 metric tonnes of government-supplied Indorama fertilizers. The fertilizers, originally allocated for Lagos and Oyo states, were allegedly diverted to Bauchi state.
The NSCDC Public Relations Officer, ASC Ruth Rimvyok, disclosed this to journalists on Monday in Jos. According to Rimvyok, the suspects were detained in the Mararaban Jama’a area of Jos South Local Government Area following actionable intelligence received by the command.
“The allocation papers clearly indicated that these fertilizers were destined for Lagos and Oyo states, but the suspects attempted to divert them to Bauchi instead,” Rimvyok explained.
She further detailed the swift action taken by the NSCDC upon receiving the intelligence report. “Acting promptly on information provided by our headquarters and the office of the National Security Adviser, our personnel successfully apprehended the five suspects on August 21 and 23, respectively,” she said. “The arrests were made alongside the seizure of two trucks, each loaded with 35 metric tonnes of government-supplied Indorama fertilizers.”
The incident has raised concerns about the potential involvement of a broader network of individuals or groups in the diversion scheme. The NSCDC has launched a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend all parties responsible for the illegal diversion of these essential agricultural products.
One of the suspects, Abubakar Mohammed, denied any wrongdoing, insisting that he was merely following instructions to transport the fertilizers to Bauchi. However, the NSCDC has remained resolute in its commitment to uncovering the truth behind the diversion.
“The ongoing investigation is crucial to ensuring that those behind this illegal act are brought to justice. The NSCDC is determined to prevent any further diversion of government resources intended to support agricultural development in various states,” Rimvyok stated.
