The former Vice President and the standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has responded to the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, stating that while the PDP may have lost a battle, the war is far from over.

During a press briefing held at the PDP Headquarters in Abuja to address the verdict that upheld President Bola Tinubu’s victory, Atiku expressed his respect for the court’s decision but refused to accept it, claiming it lacked justice.

In his words, “I respect the judgment of yesterday but I refuse to accept it because it lacks justice. In the words of my mentor, Shehu Yar Adua, ‘losing a battle is less important than losing a war.’ We shall win the war of restoring confidence and hope in our electoral system. The war is not over.”

Atiku highlighted his belief in the judiciary as the sanctuary of justice and explained his decision to go to court, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring that democracy is strengthened through fair hearing and transparent elections.

He went on to express his disappointment with the judgment, stating that it fell short of his expectation in redressing the issues surrounding the last presidential election, particularly the management of the electoral process by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

However, Atiku made it clear that his confidence in the judiciary remained unshaken. He announced that he had instructed his lawyers to activate his constitutionally guaranteed rights of appeal to the Supreme Court, emphasizing his conviction that the electoral process should be free from manipulation and reflect the true will of the electorate.

In conclusion, Atiku called on his supporters to remain steadfast and invoked the wisdom of his mentor, the late Shehu Yar’Adua, by saying, “We might have lost a battle yesterday, but the war is well ahead of us. With our faith in God, we shall win the war of restoring confidence in our electoral system.”
