Italy's Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Luca Attanasio, has been killed in an attack on a United Nations (UN) convoy on Monday, a report has said.
Attanasio had represented Italy in the DR Congo since 2017. He joined the diplomatic service in 2003 and spent time in Morocco and Nigeria
The DRC Foreign Ministry, which confirmed the development in a statement, explained Attanasio, 43, died in the hospital after the UN convoy he was travelling in was attacked near Goma, eastern Congo, around 10.15 am.
Findings revealed an Italian military police officer and another person travelling in the convoy were also killed in the same attack.
The statement said: "It is with deep sadness that the foreign ministry confirms the death, today in Goma, of the Italian ambassador.
"No effort will be spared to shed light on what happened," the DRC Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
